Support
Setup help and answers for Zonal, the iPhone app that turns your Philips Hue lights into a live heart-rate zone display.
Contact us
Or, in the app, open Settings → Contact support. Messages sent from there include your app and iOS version and whether your monitor and lights are connected, which usually saves a round of questions. We reply by email.
What you need
- An iPhone on iOS 26 or later.
- A heart-rate monitor that broadcasts standard Bluetooth heart rate: a chest strap or armband from Polar, Wahoo, Garmin and others. Monitors that only use ANT+ won't work.
- For the lights: a Philips Hue Bridge on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, and colour-capable Hue lights. Zonal uses the Hue Bridge's current local API, so the bridge needs up-to-date firmware; the original round bridge (v1) isn't supported.
Lights are optional. Without them, Zonal shows your zone on screen and on the lock screen.
Setting up
The first time you open Zonal, one guided flow takes you through:
- Hue Bridge. Zonal finds your bridge, then asks you to press the round button on top of it.
- Choose your lights. Include the lights around your bike, treadmill or rower. None are selected to begin with, so Zonal never takes over the rest of the house.
- Light style and brightness. Pick Wash or Zone meter and a Max brightness, and preview Zone 1 to Zone 5 on the real lights if you like.
- Heart-rate monitor. Put it on first: most chest straps only wake up on skin.
- Max heart rate. Your zones are built from it. Use the highest heart rate you've seen on a hard effort. Not sure? 220 minus your age is a rough start.
You can skip the bridge or the monitor and set them up later in Settings. After that, a session is: put your monitor on, open Zonal, tap Start.
Troubleshooting
Zonal can't find my Hue Bridge
- Check the bridge is powered on and connected to your router.
- Make sure your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the bridge, not a guest network.
- Allow local network access: iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network, then turn on Zonal.
- Tap Retry.
Still nothing? Choose Continue without lights and set the bridge up later in Zonal's Settings. Sessions run screen-only until then.
Zonal says my Hue Bridge needs a firmware update
Update the bridge in the Philips Hue app, then try again in Zonal. Zonal uses the Hue Bridge's current local API, which older firmware doesn't have. The original round Hue Bridge (v1) can't be updated to it and isn't supported. You can carry on without lights in the meantime.
Zonal can't find my heart-rate monitor
- Put it on. Most chest straps only switch on with skin contact, so wet the contacts if they're dry.
- Check it broadcasts standard Bluetooth heart rate. Monitors that only use ANT+ won't appear.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and Zonal is allowed to use it: iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth, then turn on Zonal.
- If another app or device is holding the monitor's only Bluetooth connection, disconnect it there first.
- Still nothing? Try a fresh battery.
Can my monitor connect to Zonal and my training app at the same time?
Many heart-rate monitors can hold more than one Bluetooth connection at once, so Zonal and your training app can both read them. Some allow only one. If yours does, connect your training app another way, for example over ANT+ where your monitor and setup support it, and keep Bluetooth for Zonal. Your monitor's manual says how many connections it supports.
The heart-rate signal dropped mid-session
After about 5 seconds without a reading, Zonal shows "Signal lost — searching…" and the room holds your last zone. After about 30 seconds it eases to a soft white. When the signal comes back, the room returns to your zone on its own. A strap that has slipped or dried out is the usual cause.
My lights didn't go back after a session
Stop always puts every light back how it was when you tapped Start: on or off, colour and brightness. If Zonal was closed or your iPhone restarted before you tapped Stop, open Zonal and Home will ask Restore your lights? Tap Restore lights.
If the bridge was offline or a light was unplugged at the time, set that light again in the Philips Hue app.
The room is slow to change zone
That's on purpose. Zonal averages your heart rate over 3 seconds, and a new zone has to hold for 4 seconds before the room steps up, or 10 seconds before it steps down. That keeps the room steady through a few easy seconds instead of flickering on every heartbeat. Your heart rate also takes 30 seconds or more to catch up with a harder effort, so the room follows your heart, not your legs. Every change is a slow fade.
The room shows a different zone from my training app
Apps build zones differently. Zonal uses five zones from your max heart rate (under 60%, 60–70%, 70–80%, 80–90% and 90% and up), or from your threshold heart rate if you set one. If your training app uses a different max heart rate or different zone boundaries, a reading near a boundary can land in a different zone.
Set the same max or threshold heart rate in both to bring them close: in Zonal, that's Settings → Max heart rate, or Your zones → Change on Home. Zonal also waits for a zone to hold before the room changes, so it will always trail a live number slightly.
What's the difference between Wash and Zone meter?
Wash, the default, sets every light you include to your zone's colour. Gradient light strips show it as a two-tone blend.
Zone meter turns a gradient light strip into a gauge that fills band by band, Zone 1 to Zone 5, as your zone climbs, and the room's brightness climbs with it. Fill from the other end flips the direction to suit how the strip is mounted. Change it in Settings → Light style.
The wrong lights change, or they're too bright
Zonal only uses the lights you include. Change them in Settings → Lights, where each light has a flash button so you can tell which bulb is which. Settings → Max brightness sets a ceiling (25, 50, 75 or 100%) that no zone goes above.
My zone isn't showing on the lock screen
While a session runs, Zonal shows your zone, heart rate and elapsed time as a Live Activity on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island. If it's missing, check that iPhone Settings → Zonal → Live Activities is on.
Privacy and your data
How do I turn off analytics?
In Zonal, open Settings and turn off Share anonymous usage. Zonal stops sending straight away. The analytics are anonymous and never include your heart rate. The privacy policy lists exactly what's counted.
How do I erase everything Zonal stores?
Settings → Erase all data removes your settings, your Hue Bridge pairing and your paired monitor from your iPhone, and resets the anonymous analytics ID. Zonal then starts again from setup. To remove everything, use it before you delete the app.
Does Zonal store my heart rate?
No. Your heart rate is read live to set your lights. It's never stored and never leaves your iPhone. Zonal keeps no workout history and has no account.
